Up until recently the Korean scientific community was hesitant about working with creationists due to the fear of giving the movement more credence. But silence is no longer an option.

The STR has been fighting to remove content from textbooks that describe evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestor of birds. This is only one aspect of the evolution of the development paradigm.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the changes in the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living creatures adapt to their environment, which could result in changes to genes or entire genomes. Over the course of many generations these changes could result in the emergence of new species. The prevailing theory of evolution is called natural selection, which explains the process that allows individuals with advantageous characteristics survive and reproduce more frequently than those with less favorable characteristics. This differential reproduction can be a catalyst to the development and emergence of new species.

The term "evolution", which comes from the Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has changed, both in science and in other fields. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into another species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist disciple who invented the term "transmutation" to describe this view. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.

More recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living things develop characteristics that increase their chances of survival or the ability to produce offspring. Over time this genetic variation can cause the emergence of completely new biological functions or physical traits in the same population. This variation in gene frequencies is known as natural selection and it is the main driver of evolutionary change. However other changes that are not genetic, such as increases in the muscle mass as a result of diet or exercise can't be considered examples of evolution since they're not inherited by the next generation.

It is essential to remember that evolutionary biology isn't in contradict religious beliefs because it only focuses on physical objects, events, and processes.

Many religious people have come up with a way of reconciling evolution with their convictions. For example some Christians believe that God created the world through evolution and that humans have an ancestral lineage with other animals.

It is crucial that science educators stand up for teaching evolution. Unfortunately, in a few countries around the world the anti-evolution movement is growing. In the United States some states have taken measures to restrict teaching of evolution. In South Korea, a group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research is urging the removal of textbooks on the evolution of horses and the Avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.

While these are troubling developments, it is important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a wide range of sources, including fossils, genetic studies and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently verify the evidence.

The majority of scientists believe in the theory of evolution. The reason for this is various reasons. Certain scientists are studying evolution to discover practical solutions such as the development of new medicines and other treatments, while others use it to improve the quality of animal and plant species, mostly to benefit of humans. Some are simply curious, and others have a profound faith in God and want to know how the universe works.

What is Creationism?

Creationists are people who believe that God created the universe and everything in it. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken as such. Many creationists are Christians however, not all. Creationists are usually divided into two groups: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.

The YECs are the best known form of creationist, and they believe that God created the universe in the exact way described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the first six days of creation was true and that the universe and the life on Earth were created only recently.

OECs are not as well-known however they are just as committed to their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and life on Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is an untruth.

Both forms of creationism deny that scientific theories such as natural selection and abiogenesis can explain the origins of life on Earth. They assert that evolution is not possible because it requires miracles. The pioneers of modern scientific thought resisted miracles out of fear they could lose their credibility.

Some creationists accept naturalistic evolution and special creation and refer to their belief as "theistic evolution." This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of created kinds." This theory states that God creates species from scratch and then allows them to change over time. In the end, these evolutionary changes will produce new species that are identical to the original species.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the universe in a single event known as the Great Flood. They believe that all species were created at the same moment and then slowly evolved. They reject the concept of abiogenesis, and argue that self-replicating life can't come from nonliving matter.

In general, creationists oppose teaching evolution at schools. This is supported by a myriad of professional associations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. However, certain scientists and educational institutions are more flexible, and allow for the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curricula.

What is Creationism in Korea?

When people think of the concept of creationism most often, they think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently declared that they will be removing references to evolution from their editions. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this drive. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, called the Archeopteryx. Its sights are now set on the removal of excerpts from Darwin's notorious finch research as well as on human evolution too.

STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families as well as individual members. Its mission, it states is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which portrays an image of students as being negative. It also aims to counteract the influence of American creationists in the United States. A survey of students in biology found that half did not believe in evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely clear, but could include religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the country.

One of these was a textbook on natural science with a creationist stance. This led to an interest among college communities. In 1991 an academic and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university and it is taught to this day.

On August 6-7 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six foreign lecturers including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin addressed a crowd of more than a thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given talks on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
