For a long time the Korean scientific community resisted engaging with creationists for fear of giving the movement more credence. However, silence is no anymore an option.

The STR has been battling to get rid of textbooks that explain evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestor of birds. This is only one aspect of how the development paradigm has evolved.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a concept in science that explains changes in genetic characteristics over time. The theory is based upon the fact that living organisms adjust to their environment, which could lead to variations in genes or whole genomes. These changes can over many generations result in the development of new species. The predominant theory of evolution is natural selection, which explains the process by which those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more frequently than those with less favorable characteristics. This variation in reproduction could, over time, lead to the development and emergence of new species.

The term "evolution" is derived from the Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has developed, both in science and in other fields. Early evolutionists such as Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into a new species. The term"transmutation" was coined by the Lamarck's disciple, embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, to describe this view. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the concept of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy's student.

Recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living things develop characteristics that increase their chances of survival or ability to reproduce offspring. As time passes this genetic variation can lead to the emergence of completely new physical or biological traits in the population. Natural selection is the mechanism that triggers the majority of evolutionary changes. However non-genetic changes like the growth in muscle mass from diet or exercise can't be considered examples of evolution because they are not passed on to future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has stood the test of time and thousands of scientific experiments Creationists have taken advantage of the idea that the theory is controversial and argue that it shouldn't be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists have gained a few victories in their fight to remove evolution from high school textbooks, including the removal of references to the evolutionary roots of humans as well as the Archaeopteryx feathered dinosaur that is thought to be an ancestor of birds.

It is essential for science educators to stand up for the teaching of evolution. Unfortunately, in a few nations around the world there is a growing anti-evolutionist sentiment. In the United States, efforts to restrict the teaching of evolution have made progress in some states. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC) is a campaign for textbook content on the evolution of horses and their ancestral avian species Archaeopteryx.

It is vital to remember, however, that the evidence in support of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence comes from a wide variety of sources, including fossils, genetic studies and the behavior of living organisms. Other scientists independently confirm the evidence.

Certain scientists study evolution in order to make practical discoveries for example, such as the development of medications, while others are motivated by an interest in improving the quality of life for animals and plant species, typically to benefit humans. What is Creationism?

Creationists are people who believe that God created the universe and everything in it. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken literally. Although some creationists are not Christian however, many are. Creationists generally fall into two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

The most popular kind of creationist is called the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in the exact way that is described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the first six days of creation is literal and that the universe and the life on Earth were only created recently.

OECs may be less known, but their beliefs are just as intense like those of YECs. OECs believe that the universe and life on Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is a myth.

Both kinds of creationism deny the scientific theories that natural selection and biogenesis can explain how life came to be on Earth. They assert that evolution is inconceivable because it would require miracles. The founders of modern scientific thought shunned miracles out of fear they would lose their credibility.

Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and refer to their belief "theistic evolution." It is sometimes called "continuous creationism" or "evolution from created kinds." In this belief system, God creates the original species, and then allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes eventually will result in new species similar to the original.

Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things in a single event, called the Great Flood. These creationists believe that the first species were all created at the same time and that they evolved slowly afterward. They reject the idea of abiogenesis and assert that self-replicating living cannot come from non-living matter.

In general, creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations, like the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education endorse this view, as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, certain scientists and educational institutions are more flexible, and permit the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curriculum.

What is Creationism?

When people think of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. The publishers of high school textbooks announced last week that they would eliminate references to evolution from their books. A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and has been the driving force behind the move. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of an avian, called the Archeopteryx. The next step is to remove portions of Darwin's notorious finch-research as well as on human evolution.

STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families as well as individual members. The goal, according to STR is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints a negative view for students. It also aims to counteract the influence of American creationists in the country. A survey of biology students teachers revealed that around half do not believe in evolution. The reasons for this are not clear, but may include religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists in the country.

The KACR achieved many things through its seminars and lectures in the past. It has a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them is a textbook on the natural sciences, with an evolutionary perspective that has sparked interest among college students. In 1991 the year 1991, a minister and professor started teaching Creation Science in one university, and it continues to be taught until today.

KACR members and KACR have also given lectures on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
